The Voltker System, locally known as Volt or the Volarian system, is now the home of the Federatsyia Feniska's capital planet of Voltker Prime. Named after the ambitious expeditionary leader Remus T. Voltker, it is an extremely small system with some very large planets. Its star, Voltker, is an O-type main sequence star. Given its size as a blue giant, the three celestial bodies that make up the Voltker system are a significant distance away to remain in a habitable zone. While initially written off for the handful of celestial bodies in orbit around its star, the discovery of Voltker Prime as a garden world spurred the Coalition into investing heavily into its development. A source of local food that could be exported to the far reaches of colonial space was a necessity for the burgeoning human empire, and as such the Voltker system grew to be an integral trading hub for the Coalition's farthest colonies.
Nowadays, Voltker Prime is still important to the development of the Federation's territory and supplies a vast majority of foodstuffs used by the burgeoning empire. All of the Coalition's investment and planning was turned against them, and because of the Voltker system's close proximity to many of the Coalition's trading partners, they can offload their surplus at a lower cost and make a profit while crippling the Coalition's ability to trade with certain alien empires.
Planets and Major Celestial Bodies
Voltker Prime is the first and only naturally habitable planet in the Voltker system. It is located within Coemarian's habitable zone, which led to its development as a garden world. Discovered early by Coalition expeditionary forces, its significance was dismissed out of hand until a closer look revealed that Voltker Prime would make an excellent breadbasket type world. It was then that the Coalition began to invest heavily in its development, and as the Succession War came to a conclusion, Voltker Prime became the natural capital planet of the young Federation. The autocratic leader of the Federation meets with his cabinet in his lavish palace in the capital Coronet City, while major exports of foodstuffs, wood, furs and meat regularly fill the Federation's coffers.
Voltker Secundus is the second of three celestial bodies in the Voltker system, and is Voltker Prime's natural satellite. Early geological scans revealed a significant amount of metals and ore within the moon's crust, and as such it was quickly settled so that its resources could be monetized and capitalized on. It is smaller than Luna, but not by much. However, by the end of the Succession War, the Federation had been so intense with their mining operations that they had hollowed out a significant portion of the moon, leading to the danger of its destabilization. This forced the Federation to deploy a series of gravitational stabilizers across the moons surface to keep it from possibly breaking apart. As of now, mining on Secundus is prohibited until the Federation can alleviate the risk of it destabilizing.
The Iron Belt
Separating Voltker from the second planet in the system, Aritoran, is a densely populated asteroid belt that is elliptical in nature. This belt makes navigating local space difficult, but acts as a prime natural defense mechanism for Voltker Prime. The celestial bodies that comprise the Iron Belt are so named for their heavy deposits of iron and other metals, supplanting the mining efforts on Secundus; a lot of the mining facilities on the moon now merely refine ore brought back from the Iron Belt, keeping things reasonably profitable given the freeze on operations on Secundus. The Federation navy gets a good percentage of its metals from the Iron Belt when locally sourced - these metals also go to developments on Voltker Prime or towards the construction of orbital installations in the local system.
As the final and third planet in the Voltker system, Aritoran is a rocky planet devoid of life. It is metal-deficient for the most part, and what little deposits have been detected by deep scans are nowhere near profitable enough to prompt any mining operations. Instead, Aritoran acts as sort of a galactic garbage dump. The Federation began disposing of trash from other colonies on the uninhabitable world's surface shortly after the end of the Succession War. Aritoran's high gravity is excellent for ensuring that the garbage remains there, and the Federation has even sold the rights to dump garbage on the planet to entities like the White Belt or the Poliesu; in this way, they can avoid the environmental impact of disposal on their home worlds, and the fees they pay to the Federation are minuscule when compared to the upkeep of dedicated garbage burners or matter reclamators.
This has led to an abundance of unlicensed scavenger ships to make 'A-Runs', as they are called, to scour the planet's surface for useful salvage before leaving the system. Quite a few vessels shot down by the Federation navy can also call the surface of Aritoran their home.
Warning Station Theta
At the very edge of the Voltker System lies the last of the Federation's 'warning system' outposts. From the rim of White Belt space all the way to the home system, each outpost is supposed to keep an eye out for dissidents, spy ships or military invasions and then communicate this warning along in a chain to reach the Federation. Its exact location is kept secret, and it has no transponder for vessels to identify it; some theorize it is even equipped with rocket boosters so that it may orient itself as necessary; this way, if its location is ascertained by Coalition spies, it can simply change its direction and orbit to throw them off.
